Ionian nation - Ionian country

In 1866, a railway line was opened linking the town with other inland cities. In May 1919, Greece sent troops to occupy the town, intending to establish an Ionian state centered on the town. The Treaty of Sevres in August 1920 stipulated that the town would be under Greek rule for five years, after which its affiliation would be decided by a popular vote.
