Ancient dragonfly - Ancient dragonfly

An insect belonging to the order Odonata and the family Parasitidae in the class Insecta. It is distributed from Kyushu to Aomori Prefecture, and appears from May to July, but it lives in mountain valleys and is not a common species. It has a sturdy body with an abdominal length of 50 mm and hind wings length of 47 mm, a yellow background with black markings, and flies slowly. The larvae make holes in moss or damp soil in the wetlands of the valleys and hide there, catching and eating other insects that pass near the opening of the hole. This is a relict group, and only ten species are known in the world; only one, the ancient dragonfly, is found in Japan, while the other nine species are found in Australia (four in the Petalura genus), New Zealand (two in the Uropetala genus), Chile ( Phenes genus), the eastern part of North America ( Tachopteryx genus), and the western part ( Tanypteryx genus) of the same genus as Japan.

昆虫綱トンボ目ムカシヤンマ科に属する昆虫。九州から青森県まで分布し、5～7月に現れるが、山間の渓谷に生活し、普通種ではない。体は頑丈で腹長50ミリメートル、後翅(こうし)長47ミリメートル、黄色の地に黒色の斑紋(はんもん)があり緩やかに飛ぶ。幼虫は谷間の湿地で蘚苔(せんたい)類や湿土の中に孔(あな)をつくりその中に隠れて、孔の入口付近を通過するほかの昆虫をとらえて食べる。この種は遺存的な一群で、世界に10種だけ知られるが、日本にはムカシヤンマ1種だけを産し、ほかの9種はオーストラリアに4種（ペタルラ属Petalura）、ニュージーランドに2種（ウロペタラ属Uropetala）、チリに1種（ペネス属Phenes）、北アメリカの東側に1種（タコプテリックス属Tachopteryx）、西側には日本産と同属の1種（タニプテリックス属Tanypteryx）が分布している。
