1906‐72 Soviet poet. Born in Odessa, he began writing poetry at an early age, but at the age of 18 he met Mayakovsky, was strongly influenced by him, and became his imitator. He joined Mayakovsky's group Lev (Left Artistic Front), and attracted attention with his unique collections of poems, Aim (1926) and Experience (1927), which were fantastical, narrative, and included wordplay. From the 1930s onwards, in response to the demands of Soviet society, he continued to write works praising the construction of socialism and combining themes opposing fascism and war with lyrical motifs.
