Soviet poet. Born in Odessa, he began writing poetry at an early age, but at the age of 18 he met Mayakovsky, was strongly influenced by him, and became his imitator. He joined Mayakovsky's group Lev (Left Artistic Front), and attracted attention with his unique collections of poems, Aim (1926) and Experience (1927), which were fantastical, narrative, and included wordplay. From the 1930s onwards, in response to the demands of Soviet society, he continued to write works praising the construction of socialism and combining themes opposing fascism and war with lyrical motifs.

ソ連邦の詩人。オデッサに生まれ，早くから詩を書きはじめるが，18歳のときにマヤコフスキーに会い，強い影響を受け，この詩人の模倣者となる。マヤコフスキーの主宰する〈レフ(芸術左翼戦線)〉に加わり，幻想的で物語性に富み，言葉の遊びを含むユニークな詩集《照準》(1926)や《経験》(1927)で注目された。30年代以降，ソビエト社会の要請に応じて社会主義建設を賛美し，ファシズムと戦争に反対する主題を抒情的なモティーフと重ねた作品を書きつづけた。
