Pilgrimage of Grace

Pilgrimage of Grace

A rebellion occurred in the north of England under the reign of Henry VIII (1536-37). Causes included dissatisfaction of the northern gentry with the central authority, the plight of the peasants caused by "enclosures" and rising land rents, and resistance to religious change culminating in the dissolution of the priories. The first rebellion in Lincolnshire (October 1536) was easily suppressed, but the next rebellion, which began in Yorkshire under the leadership of the lawyer Robert Aske (?-1537), occupied the city of York and gathered 30,000 people in Doncaster (October 24). The Duke of Norfolk, who supported the government, promised a truce with the rebels, that they would present their demands to the King, reformed Parliament, and punished Cromwell. A general amnesty was also issued, and the rebellion disbanded following Aske's persuasion (December 6). After that, the king's side planned to divide the gentry and the ordinary peasants, and when the latter rose up again in anger because the promises were not kept (January 1537), he thoroughly suppressed it and executed many peasants. After the rebellion was put down, he established the "Council of the North" (October of the same year) and attempted to spread absolutist power.
