Kilkenny - Kilkenny (English spelling)

The capital of County Kilkenny in the south of the Republic of Ireland. Population 8,594 (2002 census estimate). An old town located 40 km upstream from where the River Noar joins the River Barrow, it is the centre of the Lowlands of Suir and Low Noar. It is an agricultural region with livestock farming, brewing, furniture manufacturing, clothing, footwear and food processing industries. It is the seat of the Bishopric of Ossory. It has many medieval buildings such as St. Kenith Abbey and Almonds Castle, and is also the birthplace of the philosopher Berkeley.
