The ready-made clothing industry. Apparel means "clothing." It is made up of apparel manufacturing wholesalers, sewing manufacturers, knitwear manufacturers, contract processing companies, import wholesalers, secondary wholesalers, and retailers that sell apparel products. The market size of the Japanese apparel industry is about 15 trillion yen (1996), and by retail sales format, 43.5% is clothing specialty stores, 32.9% is department stores, 17.8% is supermarkets, and 5.8% is mail order. By size of the companies, the majority are small and medium-sized enterprises, which reflects the nature of the fashion industry, where individual ability is the most important factor for success. As consumption becomes more individualized and diverse in the future, the advantages of being a small and medium-sized enterprise are expected to be further demonstrated. The term "apparel industry" was established in the 1970s. This was when the industry began to pursue high added value against the backdrop of the improved competitiveness of textile products flowing in from China and Southeast Asian countries.
