Japanese dormouse (mountain mouse)

Japanese: ヤマネ(山鼠) - ヤマネ（英語表記）Japanese dormouse

A small rodent mammal of the mouse family native to Japan known for hibernating (illustration). Also known as the Japanese dormouse. With its dense long hair on its tail, it looks similar to a squirrel at first glance, but its limbs are short and its body is much smaller. Its body length is 7-8 cm, its tail length is about 5 cm, and it weighs 25-38 g. There are two types of hair on its body, long and short, with soft hairs about 7 mm long growing densely and thin hairs about 17 mm long growing sparsely. Its body color is yellowish brown overall. It has a single black stripe that runs from the top of its head down the center of its back to the base of its tail.

冬眠することで知られる日本固有の齧歯（げつし）目ネズミ科の小哺乳類（イラスト）。ニホンヤマネともいう。尾に長い毛が密生するため一見リスに似るが，四肢が短く，体ははるかに小さい。体長7～8cm，尾長5cm前後，体重25～38g。体に生える毛には長短2種類あり，長さ7mm前後の柔らかな毛が密生するなかに長さ17mm前後の細長い毛がまばらに生える。体色は全体に黄褐色。頭頂から背中の中央を通り尾の付け根に達する1本の黒条がある。
