Jiaozhou Bay

Japanese:
Jiaozhou Bay

A bay in the southern part of the Shandong Peninsula, in eastern Shandong Province, China. The mouth of the bay opens into the Yellow Sea in the southeast, and is narrow with Laoshan Cape jutting out from the northeast and Xijia Island jutting out from the southwest. The Nanjiao River flows into it in the northwest. The bay is ice-free, and Jiaozhou, at the inner part of the bay, was considered an excellent port, but after it was leased to Germany in 1898, the fishing village at the head of the bay, Qingdao, developed rapidly and took over its position. It was occupied by Japan in 1914, and returned to China in 1922. The coast of the bay is one of China's leading producers of sea salt.
