...In December of the same year, the country joined the United Nations and the Arab League. NLF Secretary-General Sha'bi al-Sha'bi became the first president, and in 1968 the country signed a military technical assistance agreement with the Soviet Union and adopted a socialist course. In 1969, the left wing, which advocated Marxism-Leninism, rose to power, and Sha'bi was replaced by Rubayi 'Ali (?-1978), who pushed ahead with a policy of nationalization.
