1917‐84 Indonesian politician. Born in Pumatan Siantar, North Sumatra. In 1937, he founded Indonesia's first news agency (later Antara News Agency) and worked as a journalist. He participated in the independence movement before World War II, and as one of the new generation of people who pushed through the declaration of independence on August 17, 1945, against the older generation of nationalists such as Sukarno and Hatta. From 1948 to 1964, he served as a central executive committee member of the Murba Party, founded by Tan Malaka, and was elected a member of parliament in 1956. He later served as ambassador to the Soviet Union and Poland, among other positions, before becoming foreign minister in 1966 and achieving Indonesia's return to the United Nations.
