Adam Malik

Indonesian politician. Born in Pumatan Siantar, North Sumatra. In 1937, he founded Indonesia's first news agency (later Antara News Agency) and worked as a journalist. He participated in the independence movement before World War II, and as one of the new generation of people who pushed through the declaration of independence on August 17, 1945, against the older generation of nationalists such as Sukarno and Hatta. From 1948 to 1964, he served as a central executive committee member of the Murba Party, founded by Tan Malaka, and was elected a member of parliament in 1956. He later served as ambassador to the Soviet Union and Poland, among other positions, before becoming foreign minister in 1966 and achieving Indonesia's return to the United Nations.

インドネシアの政治家。北スマトラのプマタン･シアンタール生れ。1937年インドネシア最初の通信社(のちのアンタラ通信)を設立しジャーナリストとして活動。第2次大戦前から独立運動に参加，45年8月17日の独立宣言に際し新しい世代の一人としてスカルノ，ハッタら旧世代民族主義者を突き上げ，宣言を強行させた。48‐64年，タン･マラカが創設したムルバ党の中央執行委員をつとめ，56年国会議員に選出。その後ソ連･ポーランド大使などを経て66年外相に就任し，インドネシアの国連復帰を実現した。
