Bashir II

Japanese: バシール[2世](英語表記)Bashīr II
Bashir II
1767‐1851
A political leader from the Druze Shihāb family in the mountainous region of Lebanon. In 1788, he was chosen as an amir by Lebanon's notables, and with his military and political skills, as well as his knowledge of finance, he built the foundations of today's Greater Lebanon. He cooperated with the Ottoman Turkish government to fend off Napoleon's invasion, and maintained Lebanon's political independence even when Egypt's Muhammad Ali invaded Syria. He converted from Druze Islam to Maronite Christianity, promoted reconciliation with Christians, and was instrumental in making Maronite Christianity the national religion of Lebanon.
