Also known as a gas tank. A large container for storing city gas and other gases. In the past, there were many hydrous tanks that were divided into several stages and moved up and down depending on the amount of gas, and non-hydrous tanks that were tall polygonal cylinders with an internal piston that moved up and down under normal pressure, but nowadays there are more spherical pressurized tanks. In addition to city gas, they are widely used to store gases such as hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen, as well as pressurized liquefied ethylene, propylene, and LPG. Recently, high-pressure transportation of city gas has become common, and spherical gas holders are often used because of their low construction costs, small site area, and advantages for large-volume storage.

ガスタンクとも。都市ガスなどの気体を貯蔵するための大型容器。以前は数段に分かれてガス量の増減によって上下する有水式のものや，高い多角筒形で内部のピストンが上下する常圧の無水式が多かったが，現在では球形の加圧式タンクが多くなった。都市ガスのほかにも，水素，窒素，酸素などのガス，エチレン，プロピレン，LPGなどを加圧液化したものの貯蔵に多用されている。最近は都市ガスの高圧輸送が一般的になり，建設費が安く敷地面積も少なく，大容量の貯蔵に有利などの点から，球形ガスホルダーが多用されている。
