He was the eldest son of Natsume Mikamaro (1773-1822), a sake brewer from Shirasuga Station, Hamana County, Totomi Province (Kosai City, Shizuoka Prefecture). He was commonly known as Kyosen, and his given name was Morohira. He also went by the pen name Shien. He was adopted by Kano Ichiku, a physician from Wakayama, and served as a scholar of Japanese classics in the Kii Domain. In 1821 (Bunsei 4), he became a student of Motoori Ohira. In 1828, he published the first volume of Ruidai Waka Fukugyokushu, the largest collection of poems at the time, which was a compilation of poems by poets from all over the country, and by 1854 (Ansei 1), he had published up to the seventh volume. He participated in the editing of "Kii Fudoki" and "Ki no Kuni Meisho Zue" (1812-1851) by order of the domain. He traveled deep into the mountains of Kumano, composed 89 poems based on his experiences, and published the poetry collection "Kakien Eiso" (1854). He became known as the Kakien school. In 1856 he became the president of the domain's National Learning Institute. He died suddenly of a stroke on June 24th the following year, 1857. He is buried at Kaizenji Temple in Dojo-cho, Minato, Wakayama. He wrote the poetry treatise "Manyo Eifu" (Manyo Eifu) in which he emphasized the fresh and powerful spirit of the Manyo, but his actual works were in the Tenpo style, which added the Shin Kokin style to the Manyo style, and he praised the "Shin Kokinshu."
