…One of the most frequently cited ancient forms of prostitution is the “temple prostitution” found in Herodotus’s “Histories.” According to Book 1, verse 199 of the “Histories,” all women in Babylon had to have sex with a stranger once in their lifetime in the temple of Mylitta (the Earth Goddess equivalent to the Greek Aphrodite), and the amount could be any amount, and no man would be refused. It is said that a similar custom existed in Cyprus, but this is better thought of as a religious act praying for the fertility of the earth, or a rite of passage, rather than prostitution. …
