Honjo [village] - Honjo
A village in Higashichikuma County, central Nagano Prefecture. Population 2,445 (1995). Most of the village area is mountainous and hilly land that belongs to the Chikuma Mountains, and the Tojo River, a tributary of the Omi River, flows northwest. The central settlement, Nishijo, served as a post station on the Hokkoku Nishiwaki Road (Zenkoji Road) in early modern times. Highland vegetables such as Chinese cabbage are cultivated in the highlands, and flowers and enoki mushrooms are also produced. Livestock farming, especially beef cattle, is also thriving. Most of the villagers are part-time farmers, and many commute to Matsumoto City. The JR Shinonoi Line runs through the village.

長野県中央部,東筑摩郡の村。人口2445(1995)。村域のほとんどが筑摩山地に属する山地・丘陵地からなり,麻績(おみ)川支流の東条川が北西流する。中心集落の西条(にしじよう)は,近世,北国西脇往還(善光寺道)の間宿(あいのしゆく)的性格をもっていた。高冷地ではハクサイなどの高原野菜が栽培され,花卉やエノキダケも生産される。肉牛を中心とした畜産も盛ん。ほとんどが兼業農家で,松本市への通勤者が多い。JR篠ノ井線が通じる。
