František Palacký

Japanese: パラツキー - ぱらつきー(英語表記)František Palacký
František Palacký

A Czech historian and politician born in Moravia. Known as the "Father of the Nation." He studied at the Evangelical School in Pozsony (Presburg, now Bratislava), but became interested in the Czech national revival movement and went to Prague, where he got a job in the archives of an aristocratic family. He was then appointed historian of the Estates' Assembly, and wrote his magnum opus, History of the Czech People (Dějiny národu českého v Če chách av Moravě, 1848-76) (German translation: Geschichte von Böhmen, 1836-67). As a promoter of the Austro-Slavic movement to reorganize the Austrian Empire into a federation of ethnic groups, he became chairman of the Slavic National Congress held in Prague in 1848. However, when the Austrian government ignored the demands for equality and autonomy for the Slavs and established a dual monarchy with Hungary (1867), he leaned toward Russian pan-Slavism.
