Medicines that make it easier to expectorate phlegm. There are those that dilute the phlegm itself to make it easier to expectorate, and those that stimulate coughing to make it easier to expectorate phlegm. Examples of medicines that make it easier to expectorate phlegm include soluble expectorants made with alkaline agents such as ammonia and baking soda, mild expectorants that use the viscosity of plants such as licorice and rhizomes to ease airway irritation, and stimulant expectorants such as saponins (senega root, ammonium carbonate).

痰を出しやすくする薬。痰そのものを薄めて出しやすくするものと，刺激により咳嗽を促して，痰を喀出しやすくするものとがある。痰を喀出しやすくするものとしては，アンモニア，重曹などのアルカリ剤による融解性去痰薬，カンゾウ，シャゼンソウなどの植物の粘性を応用して気道刺激を緩和する緩和去痰薬，サポニン剤 (セネガ根，炭酸アンモニウム) などのような刺激性去痰薬がある。
