A volcano in northeastern Tanzania, East Africa, near the Kenyan border. It is the highest mountain in Africa. Its main peak, Kibo, is 5,892m high. It was first climbed by German H. Mayer in 1889. Although it is located near the equator, the summit is covered in perpetual snow, and the mountain has a long base, presenting a magnificent landscape. Coffee and bananas are cultivated by the Chagga people in the vicinity, and the Maasai people run cattle ranches in the savannah. The area is a national park, and was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1987.
