The East German state had a so-called democratic centralist system of government with the highest authority being the Volkskammer, a people's parliament formed by representatives of mass organizations such as the SED, the Christian Democratic Union, the Liberal Democratic Party, the National Democratic Party of Germany (founded in 1948), the German Democratic Peasants' Party (founded in 1948), the Free German Trade Union Federation, the Freier Deutscher Gewerkschaftsbund (FDGB), the Free German Youth Federation (Freie Deutsche Jugend (FDJ), and women's organizations. Despite the existence of multiple political parties, elections were limited to a vote of confidence in candidates from the National Front for a Democratic Germany, which included political parties and mass organizations.
