American professional baseball player (left-handed batter/thrower). Born in New York. After dropping out of Columbia University, he joined the New York Yankees in the major leagues in 1923, and became the starting first baseman in 1925. As the Yankees' cleanup hitter, he was known as part of the Million Dollar Batting Line, along with Ruth, who was the No. 3 hitter. From June 1925 until April 1939, when he succumbed to an extremely rare progressive paralysis disease (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease), he set a major league record of 2,130 consecutive games played, and was nicknamed the "Iron Man." He hit 23 grand slams, the most in the major league, and won the Triple Crown in 1934. He also played in the World Series seven times. He visited Japan twice, in 1931 (Showa 6) and 1934. He showed off his brilliant playing style. His uniform number 4 has been retired by the Yankees in recognition of his achievements. [Junji Kanda] His total stats over 17 years were 2,164 games played, 2,721 hits, a batting average of .340, 493 home runs, and 1,995 RBIs. His main titles were batting champion once, home run king three times, RBI king five times, and MVP twice. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939.
