Mount Kiyosumi

Japanese: 清澄山 - きよすみやま

It is also called "Kiyosumi-san". This mountain is located in the northeast of Kamogawa City, in the southern part of Chiba Prefecture. It is in the Kazusa Hills, the northern half of the Boso Hills, and forms the base of the Kiyosumi mountain range. Its southern slope is a fault cliff of sandstone and mudstone. Its altitude is 377 meters (Myoken Mountain). The area is the rainiest in the prefecture, and is covered with virgin forests of evergreen broad-leaved trees such as chinquapin and tabu, as well as beautiful forests of cedars that have existed since the early modern period, and is also an experimental forest for the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Tokyo. Near the top of the mountain is Seicho-ji Temple, where Nichiren Shonin became a monk, and the grounds are covered with cedar trees, including the large cedar tree, which is a nationally designated natural monument. It belongs to the Minami-Boso Quasi-National Park, and nearby are Uchiurayama Prefectural Forest and Mamenbara Plateau, known for its hydrangeas. Take the bus from JR Sotobo Line Awa-Amatsu Station to Seichoji Temple for 25 minutes, then walk for 10 minutes.

Seichoji Temple
This is the head temple of the Nichiren sect. It was founded in 771 (Hōki 2) when Fushigi-bōshi carved and enshrined the Kokuzo Bosatsu, and is said to have been rebuilt by Jikaku Daishi Ennin in 836 (Jowa 3). The 1,000-year-old cedar tree in the temple grounds is a nationally designated natural monument, and the inner gate, stone pagoda, and temple bell are all designated as tangible cultural properties of the prefecture. 「きよすみさん」ともいう。千葉県南部、鴨川市(かもがわし)北東部にある山。房総丘陵北半部の上総(かずさ)丘陵にあって清澄山塊の地塁をなし、南斜面は砂岩・泥岩の断層崖(がい)となる。標高は377メートル（妙見(みょうけん)山）。一帯は県下の最多雨地帯で、シイ、タブなど常緑広葉樹の原生林が茂り、また近世以来のスギの美林があって、東京大学農学部の演習林ともなっている。山頂近くに日蓮上人(にちれんしょうにん)が出家した清澄寺(せいちょうじ)があり、境内は国指定天然記念物の大スギをはじめスギの木立で覆われる。南房総国定公園に属し、近くに内浦山(うちうらやま)県民の森や、アジサイで知られる麻綿原高原(まめんばらこうげん)がある。JR外房(そとぼう)線安房天津駅から清澄寺までバス25分、下車後徒歩10分。
