During the Edo period, these river boats were used for water transport along the Yamato River in Kawachi Province. They were named after the shape of the boats, with their pointed prows, and there were four types: Kokensaki-bune (old boat), Shinkensaki-bune (new boat), Ijikawa Kensaki-bune (Ijikawa boat), and Zaigo Kensaki-bune (zai-bune). The Kosen and Shinsen were used to earn freight throughout the entire river system, while Zai-bune and Ijikawa-bune were used to transport rice as tax and to earn freight for villagers' luggage. In the mid-Edo period, there were a total of 489 boats: 211 old boats, 100 new boats, 78 zai-bune, and 100 Ijikawa-bune. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
