Gyobok - Gyobok
A deciduous or evergreen tropical tree of the Capparaceae family (illustration) that grows to a height of about 10 m. The leaves are alternate and have long petioles about 10 cm long. The leaf blade is trifoliate and the leaflets are ovate to long ovate, entire and pointed at the tip. The flowers are large, white when in bloom, later turning yellow, and about 3 cm in diameter, in corymbs borne at the tops of the branches. There are four petals and four stamens. The fruit is a berry measuring 5-7 cm in size and containing many seeds. It is distributed widely from the Ryukyu Islands to the tropical regions of the Old World. The fruit has an unpleasant odor but is edible.

高さ10mあまりになる落葉,あるいは常緑のフウチョウソウ科の熱帯樹木(イラスト)。葉は互生し,10cm前後の長い葉柄がある。葉身は3出複葉,小葉は卵形から長卵形で全縁,先はとがる。花は枝頂に生じた散房花序につき,大きく,開花時は白色,のち黄色をおび,直径3cmあまり。花弁は4枚,おしべも4本である。実は5~7cmもある液果で,多数の種子がある。南西諸島から広く旧世界熱帯域に分布。果実は異臭があるが食べられる。
