They are also called Archaeocyathida or Archaeocyatida. They are unique marine epiphytes known only from the Early to Early Middle Cambrian Period of the Paleozoic Era. They have been classified into various different classes, but recently they have been classified as an independent animal phylum, Archaeocyatha, which occupies a position close to the phylum Porifera, and are considered to be the only extinct phylum in the animal kingdom. アーケオシアタス類または古杯類(こはいるい)とも呼ばれる。古生代のカンブリア紀前期から中期初頭にのみ知られる特異な海生の着生動物である。分類上これまで種々異なる部類に扱われてきていたが,最近は海綿動物門に近い位置をしめる独立した動物門Archaeocyathaとされ,動物界の中で絶滅した唯一の門と考えられている。軟体部は化石として保存されないため,未解決の問題が少なくない。骨格は炭酸カルシウムからなる。
