Tupelo (English spelling)
A deciduous tree of the Botryllaceae family found widely in eastern and southeastern North America, it grows in wetlands and can reach a height of 30-40 m and a diameter of 1-2 m. The leaves are alternate, with the blades 5-12 cm long, obovate to elliptical, entire but occasionally irregularly coarsely serrated. Petioles 0.6-3.5 cm long. The flowers are small, greenish-white, with many male flowers clustered together in a head and two to several female flowers clustered together. The calyx is bell-shaped with five lobes at the end, with five petals and 5-12 stamens. The fruit is an 8-12 mm long egg-shaped drupe that ripens blue-black.

北アメリカの東部~南東部に広く分布するヌマミズキ科の落葉高木で,湿地に生育し,高さ30~40m,直径1~2mになる。葉は互生し,葉身は長さ5~12cmの倒卵形~楕円形,全縁であるがまれに不規則な粗鋸歯をもつ。葉柄0.6~3.5cm。花は帯緑白色の小花で,雄花は多数が頭状に集まり,雌花は2~数花が叢生(そうせい)する。萼は鐘状で先が5裂し,花弁5枚,おしべ5~12本。果実は長さ8~12mmの卵形の石果で青黒色に熟する。
