Six principles advocated by the Vaisheshika school of India. The original meaning of "phrase meaning" was "the object of a word," but after Patanjali of the grammar school associated it with parts of speech such as nouns, adjectives, and verbs, this school came to consider it as a "principle" or "category." There are six: substance, quality, motion, universal, particular, and intrinsic. For example, in the statement "A white cow is walking," the cow is the substance, whiteness is the quality, walking is the motion, the cow-ness that exists in the cow is universal to all cows and particular to all others, and the relationship that whiteness, walking, and cow-ness have to the cow is intrinsic.
