Mount Jade

Japanese: 玉山 - ぎょくさん
Mount Jade
Located in the center of Taiwan, this is the highest mountain on the island. It is in the Yushan Mountain Range, which runs parallel to the west of the Central Mountain Range that runs north to south across Taiwan. It is designated as Yushan National Park. The main peak is 3,952m above sea level, and there are four surrounding peaks (all over 3,500m) to the east, west, south, and north, forming a mountain massif. It is made up of alternating layers of Tertiary slate and grey sandstone. Tropical to cold zones of vegetation are found from the foot to the summit, and deep vertical valleys run through the Gundaxi and Shalixian Rivers to the north, and the Lounong River and Nanzihxian River to the south. During the Japanese colonial period, it was called Niitakayama, but the indigenous Taiwanese Bunun people lived in the surrounding area and continued to resist Japanese rule. In 1991, the New Central Longitudinal Highway, which crosses Yushan National Park, was opened, dramatically improving transportation access.
