A village in Kikuchi County in northern Kumamoto Prefecture. Population 5,410 (1995). It borders Kikuchi City to the north. Almost the entire area occupies the western slope of the Aso outer rim, with Mount Kuradake (1,119m) towering at the eastern end. Before World War II, horses were bred in the vast wilderness, and the area was the birthplace of Kikuchi horses. Dairy farming and livestock farming are still thriving today, and a dairy complex has been formed. In recent years, factories related to the motorcycle factory located in Ozu Town to the south have been moving in one after another, and industrialization is also progressing. 熊本県北部,菊池郡の村。人口5410(1995)。北は菊池市に接する。ほぼ全域が阿蘇外輪山の西側斜面を占め,東端に鞍岳(1119m)がそびえる。第2次大戦前には広大な原野を利用して馬の飼育が行われ,菊池馬の産地であった。現在も酪農,畜産が盛んで,酪農団地が形成されている。近年,南接する大津町に立地したオートバイ工場関連の工場の進出が相次ぎ,工業化も進んでいる。弥生時代の藤尾支石墓群がある。【松橋 公治】
