A city in eastern Mie prefecture. Incorporated as Ujiyamada in 1906, it was renamed in 1955. The city center on the right bank of the Miyagawa River developed as a town in front of the shrine gates of Ise Jingu, and is served by the Sangu Line, Kintetsu Yamada Line, Toba Line, and Ise Expressway. The number of visitors to Ise Jingu reaches 10 million annually, and commerce is thriving as a tourist city. Spinning, machinery and equipment, electrical equipment, shipbuilding industry in Ominato since early modern times, and pearl farming are also carried out here. Located at Futamiura and Asama-ga-take, it is the base for tourism in Ise-Shima National Park. Ise Jingu has the attached Chokokan Museum and Art Museum. In January 2006, Omata-cho, Futami-cho, and Misono-mura in Watarai-gun were incorporated. 208.35 km2 . Population 130,271 (2010).

三重県東部の市。1906年宇治山田市として市制,1955年改称。宮川右岸の中心市街は伊勢神宮の鳥居前町として発達,参宮線,近鉄山田線,鳥羽線,伊勢自動車道が通じる。伊勢神宮参拝者は年間1000万人に達し,観光都市として商業が盛ん。紡績,機械器具,電気機器,近世以来の大湊の造船工業,真珠養殖も行われる。二見浦,朝熊(あさま)ケ岳があり,伊勢志摩国立公園観光の基地。伊勢神宮には付属の徴古館,美術館がある。2006年1月度会郡小俣町,二見町,御薗村を編入。208.35km2。13万271人(2010)。
