An old town occupying the southern part of Fukue Island in the Goto Islands, Minami Matsuura District, Nagasaki Prefecture. The main settlement was originally the Goto clan's Jin'ya-cho. Formerly known for coral harvesting, the town now mainly catches bonito and yellowtail. Agriculture, including sericulture, tobacco cultivation, and livestock farming, is also thriving. In August 2004, it merged with Fukue City, Minami Matsuura District's Tamanoura Town, Miiraku Town, Kishuku Town, and Naru Town to form Goto City. 49.44 km2 . 6,393 people (2003). 長崎県南松浦郡,五島列島福江島の南部を占める旧町。主集落はもと五島氏の陣屋町。かつてサンゴ採取業で知られ,現在はカツオ,ブリなどの水揚げが多い。養蚕,葉タバコ栽培,畜産など農業も盛ん。2004年8月福江市,南松浦郡玉之浦町,三井楽町,岐宿町,奈留町と合併し,五島市となる。49.44km2。6393人(2003)。
