Abbreviation: Ari. One of the twelve zodiac signs. In Greek mythology, Ari is a golden-fleece ram that flies to Colchis on the eastern coast of the Black Sea with the siblings Phrixos and Helle, hated by their father, and drops Helle in the Hellespont (now the Sea of Marmara). In Greek times, the vernal equinox was in this constellation and was called the "origin of Aries," but today, due to precession, the vernal equinox has moved to the neighboring constellation Pisces to the east. Alpha Hamar is a red giant star with a magnitude of 2.2 and a spectral type of K2, located 80 light years away.

略号Ari。黄道十二宮の一つ。ギリシア神話では，父王に憎まれた兄妹フリクソスとヘレを乗せて黒海東岸のコルキスまで飛ぶ金毛の牡羊で，途中妹のヘレを落としたところがヘレスポントス海(現，マルマラ海)であるという。ギリシア時代には春分点はこの星座にあり，〈牡羊の原点〉と呼ばれていたが，現在では歳差運動によって春分点は東隣のうお座に移っている。α星はハマルと呼ばれる2.2等，スペクトル型K2の赤色巨星で，80光年の距離にある。
