This music accompanies various mass liturgies in Coptic monasteries and churches, and is centered on hymns in Coptic. Compared to other Eastern churches, the Coptic Church's liturgy is so rich that it can be said that the entire liturgy is a musical flow in itself. The choirmaster and several choristers sing monophonic chants in a somewhat unique tone and form, incorporating a responsorial form. The singers themselves use small cymbals, sistrums, naqous and other metal idiophones as accompaniment. Coptic music is rich in Eastern coloration and contains many elements of Egyptian folk music and early Christian music. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
