Duke of Saxony and Bavaria. Brother-in-law of King Richard I of England (the Lionheart). Contributed to the colonization of the East, the founding of cities (especially Lübeck), and the promotion of North Sea trade. In 1156 he acquired the Duchy of Bavaria, becoming the most powerful man in the empire.
