...The decline of sekkyobushi indicates that the culture of the masses, centered in cities, has left oral culture and entered a written culture, and it also indicates a major change in cultural history. Even today, stories of the same material as sekkyobushi are told as ritual texts by itako in the Tohoku region and as songs by goze women in Echigo, and until recently in Iki, shrine maidens called ichijo recited the "Yuriwaka sekkyo." However, although these are oral literary works, we have to say that their content has weakened.
