…It was founded in the 16th century by Ignatius of Loyola (Figure). It is also written as the Society of Jesus, and its members are also called Jesuits.
[Foundation and spirit]
After his divine experience in Manresa, Ignatius, together with six comrades he had met at the University of Paris, P. Fabre, Xavier, D. Laines, N. Bobadilla, A. Salmeron, and S. Rodrigues, made a great promise to himself to be chaste, poor, and make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem on August 15, 1534, in Montmartre, Paris.
