Bishop of Alexandria. He succeeded his uncle Theophilus as Bishop of Alexandria in 412 and promoted a strong fight against various heresies and paganisms. In the late 430s, when Nestorius, Bishop of Constantinople, rejected the honorific Theotokos (Mother of God), which was widely used at the time, in order to clarify the distinction between the divinity and humanity of Christ, Cyril reacted strongly and had Nestorius deposed as a heretic at the Council of Ephesus (431).

アレクサンドリア主教。ネストリウスの教説を異端として弾劾するのに成功した。412年，叔父テオフィロスの後任としてアレクサンドリア主教に就任，さまざまな異端および異教との強引な闘争を推進した。430年代の終り，コンスタンティノープル主教ネストリウスが，キリストにおける神性と人性の区別を明確にするため，当時広く行われていた聖母の尊称〈テオトコス(神の母)〉を排斥したとき，キュリロスはそれにはげしく反発し，エフェソス公会議(431)においてネストリウスを異端として罷免させた。
