Tadashi Ishimoda

Japanese: 石母田正 - いしもだしょう
Tadashi Ishimoda
A scholar of Japanese history. Born in Sapporo. Graduated from the Faculty of Letters of Tokyo Imperial University in 1937. Professor at Hosei University from 1948 to 1981. From around 1938, he collaborated with Watanabe Yoshimichi and others on the study of ancient and medieval Japanese history from the standpoint of historical materialism. His work The Formation of the Medieval World (1946), which he began writing during World War II, is set in a manor and dynamically depicts the process by which local lords and the people overcame ancient despotic rule. It had a great influence on researchers who wanted to understand the structure of the Middle Ages, and became the starting point of postwar history studies. His work The Ancient Japanese State (1971), which discusses the establishment of the ancient Japanese state in the context of international relations in East Asia, is said to be a milestone in Japanese history research. He was also actively involved in scientific movements such as the Democratic Scientists Association and the Society for Historical Studies, and advocated and led a national history movement to raise historical awareness among the people themselves. His Collected Works of Ishimoda Tadashi has been published in 16 volumes.
