A branch of spectroscopy that studies atoms and molecules in molecular beams. The characteristics of molecular beams vary depending on how they are generated, but the atoms and molecules in them have consistent flow direction, speed, electronic state, and, in the case of molecules, vibrational-rotational state. Molecular beam spectroscopy has a long history, but it has recently entered a new stage of development with the application of supersonic molecular beams to laser spectroscopy. In 1922, O. Stern and Walther Gerlach famously discovered that a silver atomic beam split into two directions when passed through an inhomogeneous magnetic field, experimentally proving the existence of electron spin.
