European Launcher Development Organization

...A space development organization jointly established by Western European countries, mainly France, West Germany, the United Kingdom, and Italy. It was formed in 1975 by the merger of ESRO (European Space Research Organization), an organization that had been promoting space science research in Europe, and ELDO (European Launcher Development Organization), an organization that had been in charge of developing space rockets. It is involved in manned space activities for science and applications, such as the development of artificial satellites for science and applications, the development of Ariane rockets for launching artificial satellites, and the development of Spacelab in a joint project with the United States.
