Christian evangelist born in Thessaloniki, Greece. Together with his brother Methodios (c. 815-885), he evangelized the Slavs and was called the "Apostle of the Slavs." He was the first to create the ancient Slavic alphabet (Glagolitic script) and to translate parts of the Bible into Slavic. The Cyrillic alphabet, which is the prototype of modern Russian writing, is named after him, and is believed to have been created in the 10th century in Bulgaria.

ギリシアのテッサロニキ生れのキリスト教伝道者。兄メトディオスMethodios〔815ころ-885〕とともにスラブ人の布教に従事，〈スラブ人の使徒〉と呼ばれる。初めて古代スラブ語のアルファベット（グラゴール文字）を作り，聖書の一部をスラブ語に翻訳した。なお現在のロシア文字の原形であるキリル文字は彼の名にちなむが，これは10世紀にブルガリア地方で作られたとされている。
