315 koro-386 Bishop of Jerusalem who was instrumental in ending the Arian controversy, which took on a complicated form in the second half of the 4th century. Jerusalem had traditionally been the seat of the Nicene bishopric, but Cyril was nominated for the position by Arian Bishop Acacius of Caesarea (around 349). As a result, he was considered an Arian in the Christian world of the time. However, he soon came into conflict with Acacius and was deposed from his bishopric three times. Cyril was reluctant to accept the Nicene claim that the Father and Son are homoousios (one substance), as stated by the Nicene faction, because this does not appear in the Bible, but he formally accepted it at the Council of Constantinople (381).
