A percentage value that indicates the ratio of the width and height of a human face, and is one of the important methods of expressing face type in anthropology. The physiognomy face index uses the width of the zygomatic arch to indicate the width of the face, and the height from the hairline to the center of the lower jaw to indicate the height, and the morphology face index uses the midpoint of the nasofrontal suture (the root of the nose) to the center of the lower jaw. The morphology face index classifies faces as follows: a face less than 84.0 is a wide face (Filipinos, 81.3); a face between 84.0 and 87.9 is a medium face (Egyptians, 86.3); and a face over 88.0 is a narrow face (Russians, 88.0, Swiss, 89.4). The J. Colman face index used for skulls is equivalent to the morphology face index for living bodies. There is a large variation within the same population, so this value cannot be immediately linked to racial lineage.

ヒトの顔の幅と高さの割合を百分率で示す数値であり，人類学上顔型を表わす重要な方法の一つ。顔の幅は頬骨弓幅を用い，顔高は額の生えぎわから下顎中央下端までを用いるものを相貌学顔示数，鼻前頭縫合中点 (鼻根) から下顎中央下端までを用いるものを形態学顔示数と呼ぶ。形態学顔示数では 84.0未満を広顔型 (フィリピン人 81.3) ，84.0～87.9を中顔型 (エジプト人 86.3) ，88.0以上を狭顔型 (ロシア人 88.0，スイス人 89.4) と区分している。頭骨に用いる J.コルマンの顔示数は，生体における形態学顔示数に相当するものである。同一集団内の変異が大きく，この値をすぐに人種系に結びつけることはできない。
