Candy - Kandy (English spelling)

Japanese: キャンディ - きゃんでぃ(英語表記)Kandy
Candy - Kandy (English spelling)

The capital of the Central Province in central Sri Lanka. It is located 96 km northeast of Colombo, 500-900 meters above sea level in the central mountains inland, overlooking the Mahaweli River. It has a population of 110,049 (2001). It is known as a tourist city. Due to its location, which is well-suited for defense against enemies, and its tropical climate, it flourished as the capital of the Sinhalese dynasty until it was taken over by the British in 1815. The old town is made up of 14 blocks in a roughly square shape, with the artificial lake of Kandy at its center, and residential areas spread out on the surrounding hills. The Sri Dalada Maligawa Temple (Temple of the Tooth Relic) on the north shore of the lake is the temple that houses the tooth of the Buddha, and the Perahera festival, which is held for 10 days every August, features a procession of beautifully decorated elephants that parade through the city, attracting tourists from both inside and outside the country. In Peradeniya, 6 km south of the city, there is the University of Peradeniya, the largest university in Sri Lanka, and a tropical botanical garden covering an area of 600,000 square meters. There are many small factories in the area that produce batik, wood carving, copper and silver work, etc. In 1988, the "Sacred City of Kandy" was registered as a World Heritage Site (World Cultural Heritage).
