Kandy, also known as the Kingdom of Kandy, was the last Sinhalese kingdom in Sri Lanka, founded in 1474. Its territory was in the highlands in the center of the island, and its capital was Kandy. After the Sinhalese dynasty died out, it was ruled by Tamil kings. It maintained its independence even after most of Sri Lanka was taken over by European powers at the end of the 16th century, but was defeated by the British in 1815 and was incorporated into the British colony.
