Around 1507-77 Spanish sculptor. Born in Joanie in the Champagne region of France. After working in Italy, he arrived in Spain in 1537 and was active in the country until his death in Valladolid. Along with A. Berruguete, he is one of the leading Mannerists in 16th-century Spanish sculpture. He carved many expressionistic religious sculptures with large gestures and rippling drapery, and he was fond of depicting human suffering.
