Located in western Greece at the entrance to the Gulf of Corinth, this island is the largest of the Ionian islands. It has an area of about 780 km2 and a population of about 30,000. Its English name is Cephalonia. The island has a complex coastline and is mostly made up of rugged mountainous terrain (the highest point is 1,628m above sea level), but it produces high-quality wine, dried grapes, olive oil, and other products. It has been inhabited since ancient times, and 200 people from this island participated in the Battle of Plataea. During the Peloponnesian War, it sided with Athens.
