A county in the southern part of the Tibet Autonomous Region, China. It is the center of handicrafts and agriculture in the eastern part of the Shigatse area. It has a population of 60,000 (1994). During the Qing Dynasty, it belonged to the Tibetan Zang or Hor-Zang region, and developed as the third largest city in Tibet in front of the gate of the Great Lama Monastery at Bangkor Choelang. In the early 20th century, war broke out with Britain, which was pressing for an opening, but it was ended by the Tibet-India Treaty of 1904, and a market was established, and trade with India and Bhutan became active through the Tsemo to the south.
