A city on the Tennessee River in eastern Tennessee, USA. Settlement began in 1785 after an agreement was made with the Cherokee Indians, but it fell into ruin as a battleground between the two sides during the Civil War. It recovered quickly after that, and by the 1870s had a population of nearly 10,000. When the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) was established in the 1930s, it became its headquarters, and about 30 km to the west is Oak Ridge, an "atomic city" built in 1942 as part of the Manhattan Project. Thanks to TVA electricity and convenient water transportation thanks to dams, metal, chemical, food, and other industries are thriving. It is also home to the University of Tennessee (formerly Blount University, founded in 1794). Population: 178,874 (2010).
