American photographer. Born in Detroit. After studying engineering at Michigan State University, he worked for a Chrysler Automobile parts company. In 1941, inspired by the photographs of Ansel Adams, he began to take up photography seriously. After meeting Moholy-Nagy, he began teaching at the Institute of Design (New Bauhaus) in Chicago in 1946, and in 1949 became head of the school's photography department. In 1961, he left Chicago and moved to the Rhode Island School of Design. In 1964, he became head of the photography department there, where he taught until 1977. In addition to his work as an artist, he also achieved great success as an educator. Many of his works feature his family as subjects, and his wife Eleanor in particular became an important motif. In 1978, he became the first American photographer to hold a solo exhibition at the Venice Biennale.CallahanSource : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
