Bamboo normally does not flower, but rather gradually regenerates as it dies and regenerates, but sometimes bamboo that has been around for decades suddenly blooms. When this happens, the bamboo in that area completely withers and dies. Normally, all bamboo with the same underground stem will flower and die at the same time. This is called flowering disease. A disease is generally defined as a condition in which a plant is unable to exert its natural physiological activity due to the presence of parasitic fungi or other unfavorable external factors, and in this sense, the flowering of bamboo, which is a natural plant phenomenon, cannot be considered a disease. However, for people who use bamboo, the simultaneous death of all bamboo due to flowering goes against the purpose of cultivation.

タケは普通花が咲かずに少しずつ枯死更新していくが，数十年経ったタケが急に開花することがある。そうするとそこのタケはすっかり枯れてしまう。同じ地下茎をもつタケは一度に開花枯死するのが普通である。これを開花病と称する。病気というのは一般には寄生菌がついたり，不都合な外因によって，植物が本来有する生理活性を発揮できない状態をいうが，この意味からすれば，植物の自然の現象であるタケの開花は病気とはいえない。しかしタケを利用する人間にとっては，開花によるタケの一斉の枯死は栽培の目的に反することである。
